Crochet wine cozies are the perfect quick crochet project for when you find yourself needing a last minute gift. Pair one with a bottle of wine and they make excellent last-minute crochet gifts. Crochet wine totes make great housewarming, wedding, and holiday gifts.
I like to keep a couple different styles made up ahead of time. This way, I always have a last minute gift on hand, if needed.

CROCHET BUFFALO PLAID
- Choosing Colors: When choosing colors for your buffalo plaid design, choose one neutral color. Then choose 2 shades of another color, 1 medium shade and 1 lighter shade.
- For example: In my red & dark grey buffalo plaid wine cozy, I chose charcoal grey as my neutral color. I then chose 2 shades of red, one darker and one brighter.
- Changing Colors: All color changes are worked in the last pull thru of the last stitch of the previous color. I have a crochet color change tutorial that you may find handy.
- Colorwork – Carrying & Working over the yarn: This crochet buffalo plaid design is created using tapestry crochet. You’ll be working with only 2 colors per round (refer to the color charts in the post below for a visual). Let the 3rd color hang to the inside of the wine cozy. Of the 2 colors you’re working with for any given round, carry the unused yarn with you and work over it as you go along.
YARN
For this crochet wine cozy, I chose Lion Brand Yarn’s Vanna’s Choice. Vanna’s Choice is a great worsted weight acrylic yarn that’s available in 54 colors! You’ll have a hard time choosing colors, but your buffalo check wine tote will look great in many colors! The colors I used for my cozies are listed in the notes section below.
I decided to add a faux fur yarn accent to my wine cozies. This is optional, but if you have faux fur yarn scraps laying around, they’ll be perfect for this project!

Faux Fur Edging
With a 9.00mm crochet hook & faux fur yarn, make a chain long enough to wrap around the top edge of your crochet wine cozy. Fasten off.
Use a yarn needle and 18″ piece of charcoal grey yarn (or coordinating color yarn) and attach the faux fur yarn to the top edge of your cozy.
Continue on to Mini Fur Poms & Tie.
Mini Fur Poms (Make 2)
Rnd 1: With a 9.00 mm crochet hook and faux fur yarn, ch 3. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Tie
With a 4.00 mm crochet hook and charcoal grey yarn, begin by leaving an 8″ tail of yarn to tie a pom onto later, ch until your ch measures 24″. Do not fasten off. Place a stitch marker into the last chain to hold it so you can adjust the length later, if needed.
Using a yarn needle and beginning tail of yarn, weave the tie in and out through the holes created in round 31.
Tie 1 pom onto the end of the tie without the stitch marker. Knot to secure and weave ends into the inside of the pom.
Move the tie around to adjust it to the length you prefer. Remove chains if it’s too long, add chains if it’s too short. Once you’ve decided on the proper length, fasten off leaving a 4″ tail.
Tie 2nd pom onto the opposite end of the tie. Knot to secure and weave ends into the inside of the pom.
