Skills & Techniques You’ll Use

This crochet cable stitch blanket combines crochet post stitches on a background of single crochet stitches (sc). The gradient sections are made with the single crochet mesh stitch, a beginner-friendly crochet stitch pattern with a one row repeat. It’s finished off with a simple single crochet blanket border to create a stunning crochet 3d blanket.

How to Crochet a Cable Blanket

Crochet cables are one of many fun ways to add texture and design to a crochet blanket. Cable designs range from very basic crochet cables that only move upward, to more intricate cable designs that move inward and outward as they move upward.

Many crocheters are intimidated by cable stitches at first, but after working a few rows, they soon discover that they’re easier than they thought!

I would classify this cabled stitch crochet pattern as an intermediate cable design.

The cable accent panel is crocheted back and forth in rows. You’ll use two different post stitches to create the raised cables on top of the single crochet stitch background.

Be patient as you work crochet cables. Sometimes it takes a couple rows before you’re able to clearly see cable movement.

After crocheting the cabled accent panel, you’ll join gradient yarn and crochet along the long edges of the panel. Once your blanket is the desired width, you’ll crochet a border on a blanket using single crochet stitches.

Adjusting the Size of Your Blanket

The cable crochet blanket pictured is lapghan size. The written crochet pattern includes instructions to make a crochet baby blanket, lapghan, and large throw, but if you are looking for a smaller or larger blanket, this pattern is pretty easy to adjust.

You can easily increase the length of your blanket by crocheting more rows in the cabled accent panel. You can increase the width of your blanket by working more rows in the gradient sections.

For help determining what size to make your cable stitch crochet blanket, check out my Standard Blanket Size Chart.

Yarn

For the Aelia Cable Crochet Blanket, I chose two different yarns. I wanted to use a gradient yarn, but knew that the definition of the crochet cables would get lost in the color changes of the yarn.

So, to have the best of both worlds, I chose Lion Brand Yarns Pound of Love for the cabled accent panel and Lion Brand Yarns Mandala Gradient for the rest of the crochet blanket.

Pound of Love is the perfect yarn for so many different crochet projects and the yardage in one ball is incredible at 1,020 yards, making it affordable too!

Mandala Gradient Yarn is a worsted weight / 4, acrylic nylon blend yarn and it’s currently available in 12 beautiful colors! I love that the yarn does all of the colorwork and there are very few ends to weave in!

How to Style a Cable Crochet Blanket

1. Living Room: Drape it over the back of your sofa or an armchair for a chic yet inviting look.

2. Bedroom: Layer it at the foot of your bed for added warmth and a luxurious aesthetic.

3. Reading Nook: Pair it with a comfy chair, a good book, and a cup of tea for the ultimate cozy corner.

Pattern Notes

  • Turning chains are not counted as stitches, unless noted otherwise.
  • The first stitch of each row is worked into the same stitch as the beginning chain, unless noted otherwise.
  • Yarn Notes: Lion Brand Yarns Pound of Love and Mandala Gradient were used for the sample shown in the photos.
  • Pound of Love, 100% Premium Acrylic, (1,020 yards / 454 g / 16 oz / 932 m).
  • Mandala Gradient, 90% Acrylic, 10% Nylon (295 yards / 150 g / 5.29 oz / 270 m).
  • Yardage & Color – See Chart Below for yardage
    • Pound of Love White (MC): #550-100
    • Mandala Gradient Yellow (CC): #558-207BV
  • Changes for Sizes are written as follows: Baby (Lapghan, Large Throw).
  • Stitch Counts are written at the end of the rows as follows: (Baby, Lapghan, Large Throw)
  • Construction Notes: You’ll begin by crocheting the crocheted cable accent panel back and forth in rows with a solid color. The length of this panel determines the length of your blanket. Then you’ll crochet along the long edges of the blanket with the gradient yarn. The gradient yarn sections create the width of your blanket. Lastly, a simple sc border is added.

Size & Yardage Chart

Cable crochet blanket size chart with required yarn amounts.
The # of balls stated in the chart above are for Pound of Love and Mandala Gradient yarn only. If you choose different yarns for your blanket, you will have to calculate the # of balls needed based on yardage of that yarn.

Keep these notes in mind while crocheting your blanket. They will help you properly place your stitches, especially when your post stitches are moving horizontally, outward and inward.

  1. Unwritten Rule of Post Stitches: When working post stitches, you are working around the post of a stitch. This means that you always skip over the top loops of 1 stitch behind each post stitch. If you do not skip over those top loops, you’ll end up increasing your overall stitch count. **I believe that most of us do this without even thinking about it, but when it comes to using the post stitches to create cables that move, we forget about that little tidbit.
  2. Pay REALLY close attention to wording; it is very literal. The pattern always says “fpXX around next post st“. Except for Row 3 (which is the first row of post stitches) you will work EVERY post stitch around a post stitch from the previous post stitch row (not around a sc). In short, make sure to work EVERY post stitch from Row 5 or later, around the post of a post stitch from the previous cable row and your post stitches will be where they need to be.
  3. To achieve proper movement of post stitches, you may be working into BOTH the top loops of a post stitch and around it. Watch wording carefully and make sure to always skip the top loops of 1 stitch behind every post stitch.
  4. To maintain post stitch movement and stitch count, there are also times when you will not be working into a sc. Count stitches and pay special attention to wording.

There is a quick video and a photo tutorial that will not only help you with this crochet cables blanket, it will help you with all other crochet cable patterns.

Body of Blanket Set-Up Row – Left Side

The body of blanket set-up row – left side is worked along the left side of the Cabled Accent Panel. The purpose of this row is to decrease the stitch count along the long side of the cabled accent panel so that a larger hook size can be used for the Left Side – Body of Blanket.

Using Mandala Gradient Yarn: I joined my first cake of yarn from the inside (the palest yellow) and worked outward towards the bright yellow. To keep the gradient effect going, I began my next cake from the outside (bright yellow) and worked towards the inside (palest yellow). Continue the gradient colorway by beginning the next cake with the same color that you ended the previous cake with.
