Jingle Bell Alternatives
If you donโt have jingle bells and canโt find them anywhere close to you, here are a few great alternatives (see photos of all options near the end of this blog post):
- Big Yarn Pom: The cheapest alternative is to make a big yarn pom and theyโre super easy to make with the help of yarn pom makers!
- Shatterproof Ornaments (plain): Another great options is to use a small 2.5โณ diameter shatterproof ornament and hot glue the crocheted character to the top of it. You can find these ornaments in dollar stores and big box stores. If you have neither, there are lots of options on Amazon too.
- Shatterproof Ornaments (decorative): Same as option 2 above, but these are a little pricier. Amazon has several fun shatterproof ornaments that are more decorative. I think theyโll add a fun twist to the ornaments. Here are a few examples of what Iโm referring to: Option 1, Option 2, and Option 3.

Yarn
I used Lion Brand Yarn Pound of Love & Basic Stitch for my crochet jingle bell ornament. Both yarns are worsted weight, 100% acrylic yarns. The main reason I chose these yarns is because the colors were perfect for a girl elf ornament.
Other worsted weight yarns can be substituted.

Next, you’ll crochet her hat, collar, and ears. Then add facial features, attach her ears and hair, stuff the head and cinch it closed. After that, make and attach a hanging loop. Girl Elf’s Facial Features
Eyes
I used (2) 6mm black plastic safety eyes for the Girl Elf. You can also embroider eyes with black thread or yarn.
With the collar facing you, as shown below, center the safety eyes on her face between Rounds 6 & 7, with 2 stitches between them.
Nose
With a 12″ long piece of skin tone yarn and a yarn needle, create a nose on the Girl Elf by going back and forth horizontally around one stitch in a round beneath her eyes (see photos below). This creates a small bump for a nose.
Continue on to the Mouth.
Embroider Mouth
Cut a piece of pink (or red, or black) yarn 12″ long. Pull apart the plies and use only 2 plies to embroider the mouth (or use embroidery floss).
With a yarn needle and 2 plies of a 12″ piece of red yarn, embroider a mouth as shown in the photo below. Weave in ends.
Continue on to Blush (optional), or Attaching Girl Elf’s Ears.
Blush
I added pink cheeks to my Girl Elf by lightly dabbing a Q-tip in my blush (make-up ) and rubbing it in a gentle circle on her cheeks.
Attaching Girl Elf’s Ears
With yarn tail & a yarn needle, sew each ear onto the side of the Elf’s face as shown in the photos above. I positioned my ears in line with the eyes and nose. Continue on to Girl Elf’s Ponytails.
Girl Elf’s Ponytails
The Girl Elf’ ponytails are made with small yarn tassels.
Wrap yarn around 3 fingers, 4 times.
Attaching Girl Elf’s Hat
Position Girl Elf’s hat on her head as shown. Using yarn tail and a yarn needle, attach the hat to her head. Weave in ends.
Girl Elf’s Bangs
With a yarn needle and length of the same yarn you used for her hair, stitch on bangs. I started just above one of the eyes and stitched 3 strands to each side of her face, towards her ears.
Girl Elf Eyelashes
You can either use black thread, or pull apart the plies in a piece of black yarn.
Create eyelashes as shown in the photo to the above
Continue on to Attaching the Girl Elf to the bell.
Attaching the Girl Elf to the Jingle Bell
If you did not use your ends to stuff your Girl Elf, or you feel she needs more stuffing, add batting to her head or more yarn scraps.
Do not fasten off. Use the same tail of yarn to secure your Girl Elf to the top loop of the jingle bell. Once she’s snug, secure the yarn, fasten off and weave in ends. Continue on to Elf hat Finishing.
If you’ve chosen to use a bauble to finish your Girl Elf, you will need to secure her to the top of the bauble with hot glue.
Elf Hat Finishing
Bend the Elf’s hat to the left, as shown in the photo below. Use a 12″ piece of red yarn & a yarn needle and tack stitch the hat together so that the tail of the tail of the hat stays down. Weave in ends. Continue on to Hanging Loop.
Hanging Loop
With any color yarn & a 4.00mm crochet hook, create a chain that is 6″ long. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch.
Hanging Loop Alternative
You could also use a 6″ piece of ribbon as a hanging loop, instead. Then attach it to the top of the Elf’s hat, with a needle and thread.
