Easy Stitches

At first glance, are you intimidated by the textured crochet heart pattern on the front of the candy bag? Don’t be!

This crochet candy bag uses basic stitches, mostly single crochet (sc).

The crochet heart design uses another basic crochet stitch, the double crochet (dc).

To make the heart “POP”, you simply work the double crochet in the front loop only (FLO) of a stitch 2 rounds below.

Sounds tricky, but don’t fret!

I’ve included LOTS of step-by-step photos to help you successfully complete your Valentine’s treat bag!

I used this same technique on my Argyle Beanie & Slouch, the most popular crochet beanie pattern on my blog! Crocheters absolutely LOVE it!

The Yarn

Cotton has always been my go-to fiber for crochet bags and Lion Brand 24/7 was the perfect choice for this project. Available in 37 incredible colors, Lion Brand 24/7 cotton yarn is a worsted-weight, mercerized cotton yarn with a beautiful sheen and fantastic stitch definition.

You’ll find many great color combinations that are perfect for your Valentines Treat Bags.

Yarn Substitutions

Easily substitute another worsted weight yarn with a different fiber content, such as an acrylic like Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice.

You could also substitute a lighter weight yarn, such as a DK or sport weight, for a smaller treat bag. I think it would make a super cute 18″ doll bag.

Or, substitute a chunky or super bulky yarn for a larger crochet bag.

If you choose a lighter or heavier yarn, make sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.

Materials

• Yarn:  Worsted Weight / 4 Cotton Yarn / 55 yards; I used Lion Brand yarns 24/7 Cotton (3.5oz / 100 g / 186 yards / 170 meters / 100% mercerized cotton)
  • Main Color:  25 yards
  • Contrasting Color:  30 yards
• Crochet Hook: G/6/4.00mm (My favorite crochet hooks are the Clover Amour Hooks, I’ve never had an ache in my hand since switching)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle
  • Measuring Tape

Abbreviations (US Terms)

• ch(s): chain(s)
• sl st(s): slip stitch(es)
• st(s): stitch(es)
• sc: single crochet
• hdc: half double crochet
• dc: double crochet
• BLO: back loop only
• FLO: front loop only
• RS: right side
• Rep: repeat
• Rnd: round
• MC: main color
• CC: contrasting color

Gauge

• In sc: 10 sts = 2″; 5 rows = 1″

Finished Size

• 4″ W x 1″ D X 4″ H (not including handles)

Pattern Notes

• Turning chains are not included in stitch count, unless noted otherwise.
• Yarn Notes: Lion Brand Yarn 24/7 Cotton was used for the samples. (3.5oz / 100 g / 186 yards / 170 meters / 100% mercerized cotton).
• Another comparable worsted weight yarn may be substituted.
• Other fibers, such as acrylic, will work well too.
• Yardage for a Two Tone Treat Bag
  • MC: 25 yards
  • CC: 30 yards
• Solid Color: If you choose to use only 1 color, you will need approximately 55 yards total.
• Colors of the Samples: See Note About Color Choices below for the color combinations of all of the samples shown in the photos.
• This crochet treat bag is worked from the bottom up. You will create a tube with the heart design on it. Then when working the last 2 rounds, you will create the small handles. Lastly, you will seam bottom with a whipstitch seam and create the bottom of the treat bag.

Note About Color Choices

Colors of the Samples Shown Above: The following are the color combinations I used for the samples shown in the photos.

• White & Light Pink
  • MC: White; CC: Pink Lemonade (light pink)
• White & Red
  • MC: White; CC: Red
• White & Medium Pink (with medium pink heart)
  • MC: Rose (medium pink); CC: White
    ▪ Note: If you choose to do a little crochet colorwork to make your heart in MC instead of CC, you will need approximately 6 more yards of MC.

Valentine’s Treat Bag Instructions

I’ve written the pattern as though you’re using two colors for your crochet treat bag.

If you’ve chosen to use only one color, pay no attention to the instructions that tell you to switch colors and fasten off.

Set-Up: With a 4.00mm crochet hook & MC yarn, ch 46. Being careful not to twist the chain, join with a sl st to the 1st ch. (46 chs)

Rnd 1: Ch 1, working into the back hump of the ch, sc in each st around. Do not join. (46 sts) Work in a spiral and use a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning and end of each round.

Rnds 2 – 3: Sc in each st around. Do not Join. (46 sts)

Rnd 4: Sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the 1st st of the round. (46 sts)

*Switch to color CC. Fasten off MC.

Rnd 5: With CC yarn, ch 1, sc in each st around. Do not join. (46 sts)

Rnd 6: BLO sc in each st around. Do not join. (46 sts)

Do not fasten off. Continue on to the Crochet Heart Section.

Crochet Heart Section

This section of the project is worked in a spiral (continuous rounds). I strongly suggest using a scrap piece of yarn to keep track of the beginning and ending of each round.

Colorwork to make the heart a different color.

• If you’d like to make your heart a different color, simply work all FLO dc & FLO hdc stitches in this section, in a contrasting color.
• Work your color changes as shown in this Color Change Tutorial.
• See photos below the Heart Chart that show color changes.

Rnd 3: Sc in each st and each ch around. Join with an Invisible Join. (62 sts)

Fasten off. Weave in ends. Continue on to seam the bottom of your treat bag.

Weave in all remaining ends. Fill with your favorite candy!
